Small Backyard Design

This backyard already contained a pool but the problem was that it was too big and there was no surrounding space. So a backyard renovation was required.

The clients wanted their backyard to include a smaller plunge pool and for a connection to be created to link the house with the existing pool-house at the rear of the site. Having small children, the clients also wanted a lawn area for the children to play on.

Working with the existing structure of the pool-house, an ideal location for the new pool was in the right-angle corner the pool house. A discrete plunge pool was designed to occupy this space whilst still allowing for access around three sides of the pool. The pool-house was modified to become two sides of the pool enclosure with the remaining two sides formed by a sleek frameless glass fence that returned onto the corner of the pool house.

The backyard renovation included a timber deck adjoining with the pool which served to create an outdoor entertaining area. The barbeque area was designed in the modified services room of the pool house. We opened up the space by extending the bench-top from inside the services room to the outside.

An enclosed, roofed connection was designed to link the house to the pool-house so the clients could use the pool-house as an additional entertaining area for dinner parties. The connection was built to provide a formal, weather-proof passage to the pool house. The louvered windows on one side of the connection provide glimpses of the garden and create a sense of a journey for the user whilst a large single pane glass window on the other side allow for a longer view of the miniature bamboo garden and decorative art screen on that side boundary wall.
